The course starts with an overview of key themes such as identity, ritual, religion, individuals and community in contemporary Japanese society. It will examine various aspects of Japanese culture and behavior in a shifting social landscape. This course is designed to teach students the way to observe people, society, and culture from an anthropological perspective. It will provide an opportunity to develop qualitative research skills by which students interpret and rediscover contemporary Japanese culture and society through their own day-to day experience. Students will learn about the processes of ethnographic research methodology in order to conduct qualitative research through collaborative learning.
