This course explores Japanese tourism and travel culture from an anthropological perspective. The course starts with an overview of history and concept of tourism. It will further examine the cultural distinctiveness of Japan as a tourism destination through various forms of tourism. The course further takes a critical look at how Japan, with its cultural distinctiveness and uniqueness, experiences transformations through tourism development and by hosting foreign tourists, within the broader global context.
