Course Narrative
In this class I began my final thesis for the senior year. For this I had to research immigration in the United States and Japan. This required the use of research databases, and weeding out the usage of databases that gave back poor sources, both in English and Japanese. I had to collect and analyze everything so that I could proceed from my literary review.
This class has satisfied MLO 4 by giving me guidelines and practice for research, especially with technology. I was required to set up an entire set of questions with which to research about Immigration in both the United States and Japan. This class brought an introduction of combining socio-cultural understanding with research on a large topic, most notably social issues. For example, we did an exercise on research questions that students from the previous year made, and discussed the important points surrounding these issues by creating survey questions. We then took on the challenge of making research questions of our own regarding issues presented to us in the form of thesis titles (see pdf example).
Since I started on my own thesis or capstone, I have had to focus on what deeper understanding I can get from researching and studying immigration policy. Given my research, I began creating my presentation to the class with presentation slides (see pdf example). And with the presentations I took in feedback on the project and the varying perspectives on immigration as a hot topic, a touchy topic, or a difficult topic to handle.
I am going to continue this capstone project into the next semester, so I hope to improve my research capabilities further, my focus on the topic and to hone in on the important and deeper aspects of immigration policy. My next step will be to complete the capstone study, begin surveying in both English and Japanese and analyse that data.
