Course Narrative
In JAPN 300, we learned advising grammar, learning how to give others advice on where to go and what to do. We wrote a script and gave a presentation about a great place in the United States where we think Japanese people would like to go. I wrote my paper (pdf script/doc script) about Yosemite Park and the animals that they will see there, as well as the things they should and should not do while there. I feel that this paper has an example of my grasp on grammar and vocabulary.
During this class, we had several assistant native Japanese in the class to speak with us in Japanese. They practised English, while giving us an opportunity to expand our Japanese by speaking about major social issues, current issues and other important matters that somebody might talk about in a conversation about personal opinion. This exercise was purely in discussion form, so there are no writings or papers from this part of the class.
During the course of this class, we practised various kanji, expanded on vocabulary and writing. We expanded our vocabulary along the lines of discussion of social issues. These social issues were relevant to the world and personal values. This included discussing family, which we presented about (click to view the pdf script). This gave us a chance to learn how to talk about our own lives, cultures and families in a more abstract way.
We also learned how to communicate in a casual and formal fashion. We learned the professional way of speaking such as 敬語 as a basic knowledge to take to upper division classes. We expanded upon this in a presentation (click to view pdf script) about our dream job, speaking in a polite way to the audience about why we feel we are best for the position.
