From Fall 2014 to Spring 2015, I studied at Okayama University, in Okayama city, Okayama, Japan. There I took cultural and lingual classes that assisted me in developing an understanding Japanese language and culture, as well as internalizing the language and culture. Language classes such as Japanese 2, Japanese 3 and Reading and Writing II helped me to develop my speaking ability in the classroom. Other classes introduced me to various elements of Japanese culture, such as Japan's unique relation to nature, the ways culture is used for tourism, the dynamic of family and gender roles, and the after effects of nuclear warfare, World War I (The Great War) and World War II.
I finalized my study abroad with Okayama University with a presentation that I presented, based on my studies and experiences there in Japan. I presented on "Interactions of Japanese with foreigners with special interest in tourism" based on my close encounters with natives, foreigners and my studies in class about tourism's relation to culture (see presentation sample). I wrote on interactions between foreigners and natives with a perspective of both Asian and Western foreigners, and a focus on tourism - as tourism is an important part of Japan's culture, economy and global involvement (see sample paper). Also as part of immersion, I took pictures and reflected on them. This project, called LESCANT, was a reflection of culture in different aspects, that we might otherwise take for granted or not notice without directly paying attention to them. (see LESCANT page) |
